Day 1: Arusha to Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m)
The journey begins with a transfer from Arusha to the Momella Gate for registration. You will begin your hike through tropical rainforests, rich with birdlife and wildlife, heading towards the Miriakamba Hut (2,514m). It’s a relatively easy trek, giving you a chance to acclimatize to the altitude while enjoying beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The evening at the hut will be spent relaxing and preparing for the next day.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,570m)
On Day 2, you’ll head up to Saddle Hut, located at 3,570m. This day offers a more strenuous climb as you move through alpine meadows and rugged terrain. Along the way, take in incredible views of the Meru Crater and the surrounding valleys. Upon reaching Saddle Hut, you’ll have ample time to acclimatize and explore the area before your summit attempt the following day.
Day 3: Saddle Hut to Summit (4,566m) and Return to Saddle Hut
An early morning start (around 2:00 AM) is necessary for a summit attempt. The climb to the top is challenging, with some steep sections, but the rewards are immense. From the summit (4,566m), you’ll be treated to stunning views, including the nearby Meru Crater and the towering Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. After spending time at the summit, you’ll descend back to Saddle Hut for rest and recovery.
Day 4: Saddle Hut to Momella Gate
After breakfast, you’ll begin your final descent from Saddle Hut back to Momella Gate. The hike down is relatively easier, passing through different vegetation zones and offering a fresh perspective of the surrounding landscape. You’ll arrive at Momella Gate, where a vehicle will take you back to Arusha, marking the end of your Mount Meru adventure.
Both itineraries provide a rewarding and achievable climb, with the 4-day option offering more time for acclimatization and a slightly more relaxed pace.
